Jerome Klapka Jerome was born in Walsall in 1859. He is best known for his comic novel 'Three men in a boat' which is famous worldwide and have been read by thousands of people. He gained his unusual second name from an exiled Hungarian general with his father was familiar.
During his childhood his family moved to London's east end he got involved in the school Marylebone Grammar School. He left his school when he was 14. He spent time doing touring with many theoretical companies and he lived for a while in Tavistock, place in London with his friend George who was a character in 'three men in a boat' novel which is mentioned above.
His first book on, On Stage and Off, was published in 1885. He married in 1888 and settled in the following year in Chelsea gardens in London where he wrote his most famous novel 'three men in a boat'. He worked in his little circular drawing room and imagined beautiful views of river Thames and Surrey hills. A sequel appeared for 'three men in a boat' novel which was entitled 'Three men on the Bumble' which was published in 1900.
He founded together with some friends The Idler in 1892. This monthly magazine which gained a reputation for publishing many humorous works of R.L. Stevenson and Mark Twain. His play 'The passing of the third floor back' which was published in 1908 had a long and successful running in London's theaters and enjoyed by people all over the UK.
In the first world war, he served as an ambulance driver in France. He also published his autobiography which was called 'My life and Times'. It was published in 1926. He died in 1927 and was a great damage to the literary society.He is still loved by people all over the world and remembered for his timeless novels.
