One of the most famous scientist of India, Satyendra Nath Bose was born in Kolkata 1894. He was an Indian physicist who made a big contribution for the advancement of science in the 20th century. He was an outstanding performer throughout his journey of being a student.
He started his career in 1916 in Calcutta University as a lecturer in physics. He joined the Dacca University in 1921. In 1924, Bose gave a new derivation of Plank's law, treating radiation as a gas of photons and employing new statistical methods of counting a photon states.
He wrote a short paper on the subject and sent the letter to Einstein who recognized this paper is a big achievement and translated into German and forwarded it for publication. Einstein later applied the same method to a class of molecules. His concept was based on that particles be regarded as indistinguishable, a radical departure from the assumption that underlies the classical Maxwell Boltzmann statistics.
The new Bose -Einstein statistics was applicable to particles with integers spin and was needed for particles with integer spins, and a new quantum statistics(Fermi-Dirac statistics) was needed for particles with integer spins, satisfying Pauli's exclusion principle. Particles with integer spin are now known as Bosons to honor the work of Bose.
An important consequence of Bose Einstein statistics is that a gas below a certain temperature will undergo a phase transition to a state where a large fraction of atoms postulate the same lowest energy state. After 70 years his ideas were confirmed in the observation of new state of matter in a dilute gas of ultra cold atoms - the Bose -Einstein condensate
He died in 1974. His works inspire scientists all over the world even today and students who read his works. He would be an important figure in the world of wonders.
