What is Bhastrika Pranayama and what benefits it has?


  • What is Bhastrika Pranayama?

The word  Bhastrika comes from Sanskrit word “bhastrika” which  means “bellows”which was mostly used by blacksmiths to melt metal.
 Bhastrika Pranayama allows the flow of air into the body to produce heat at  physical  level – igniting the inner fire of mind and body. When  Bhastrika Pranayama is done, more quantity of oxygen is pumped into the body .
Bhastrika Pranayama is the process of rapid inhalation and exhalation which gives a uplift to the body and  so it is called the yogic breath of fire. Suitable for asthmatic patients and removes inflammation of the throat.

  • Starting position: Do preliminary conditioning in Sukhasana or any other meditative posture. If you are unable to sit on the floor, sit on firm chair with an upright backrest . Keep body above the waist straight and the spine erect. Eyes should be kept closed.

  • STEPS-
  1. Sit in traditional position vajrasana or sukhasana (cross-legged position). 
  2. Make a fist and fold your arms,
  3. Place them near your shoulders.
  4. Inhale deeply, raise  hands straight up and open the fists.
  5. Exhale slightly forcefully, bring your arms down next to your shoulders and close your fists.
  6. You should continue for 20 breaths.
  7. Relax with palms on your thighs.
  8. Now, take a few normal breaths.
  • Practice 3 rounds per session, with pause a between rounds. 
  • Should be practiced on an empty stomach, after evacuation in the morning.
  • Should not be practiced by patients with   hypertension, high BP, fever, vertigo,  heart ailments, spinal abnormalities, intestinal disorders and eye ailments.

J erome Klapka Jerome was born in Walsall in 1859. He is best known for his comic novel 'Three men in a boat' which is famous worldwide and have been read by thousands of people.
